KOLKTA: Later this week, Presidency University authorities will hand out forms to students to get a feedback on their academic experience, which will include information on completion of syllabi, delivery of lectures, punctuality of teachers, their understanding of the subject and guidance that students have got from their teachers.
The students will be asked to fill in the forms anonymously and submit to their respective departments.
Presidency has always been known for its unique handling of the syllabi, mostly through intellectually stimulating lectures and reference work and almost never through text book reading. “We focus on admission test and do not take students on the basis of board exam scores because we expect the intake to be intellectually above average. The idea is to just chat about a topic and lead students on to research through reference work. However, despite this, we feel that some structure needs to be followed in the classroom and we hope this new system of feedback will be used by teachers as their mirror,” said Prasanta Ray, emeritus teacher of the sociology department.
Students are also happy. “While most teachers are extremely good and dedicated, there are some who simply read out notes. Very few are able to develop a genuine interest. We hope that the feedback will act as an appraisal for the faculty,” said Rohit Singhal, a student.
VC Anuradha Lohia said: “A feedback will immensely help academics and we believe in raising the bar constantly.”
